William Wallace Guided Tour
| (Braveheart)
This one day tour may be extended to two days for more in-depth coverage. As a symbol of Scotland’s nationhood, William Wallace was a key figure in the Wars of Independence during the 13th and 14th centuries. In September 1297, Wallace began the battle to win Scotland’s independence and joined forces with Sir Andrew Murray. Together they routed the English army of King Edward I at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. This victory was followed up by an invasion into Northern England. Murray died of his wounds and Wallace was recognised in 1298, by the Community of the Realm, as the Sole Guardian of the Kingdom of Scotland. Although a confident and successful political leader, Wallace resigned the Guardianship after his defeat at the Battle of Falkirk. After the collapse of the Scottish Resistance in 1304, Wallace fought on until he was betrayed and captured in 1305. William Wallace was taken and tried in London where he was hung, drawn and quartered as a traitor. There are many sites associated with the importance of the life of William Wallace. Our tour begins in the village of Elderslie known as the birth site. Here we find, standing within the enclosures of the original Wallace property, a beautiful sculptured monument. Nearby stand the remains of a later Wallace house and the “Wallace Yew Tree”. Before continuing on our journey to Stirling, where we take lunch, we must stop at Robroyston in Glasgow to visit the Monument and the Well that mark the place where Wallace was betrayed and captured. We next visit the site of The Battle of Stirling Bridge, above which stands, on Abbey Craig where Wallace marshalled his troops, the National Wallace Monument. Here we can take time to delve into his life story, see his mighty broadsword and witness his trial. The Monument regularly hosts live performances and special events throughout the year. The William Wallace tour can be extended to two days to visit sites of importance at both Lanark and Selkirk. LANARK Wallace married his sweetheart Marion in St Kentigern’s Church, the ruins of which, still stand in the town cemetery. After her murder, Wallace is said to have slain the English Sheriff in retaliation and in fact this act sparked the revolt to reaffirm Scotland’s Independence. SELKIRK Visit the Kirk of the Forest which stands in the centre of the town. Here Wallace was made Guardian of Scotland after his invasion of northern England. THE BRAVEHEART LEGACY The movie “Braveheart” premiered in Stirling in September 1995. Starring Mel Gibson, it recognizes the enduring story of William Wallace and the fight for freedom in Scotland.
