Highlands & Islands 3 Day Guided Tour
Specially designed with families in mind DAY 1 After leaving Glasgow and crossing the Erskine Bridge, we journey along stunning Loch Lomondside and take in the panoramic views of Scotland`s most beautiful loch. We stop for a coffee break at the famous Drovers Inn before travelling across the wild Rannoch Moor and through the pass of Glencoe, scene of the bloody massacre of the Clan Macdonald in 1692. After taking lunch in Fort William in the shadow of Ben Nevis, we take “The Road to the Isles” passing the lock system known as “Neptunes Staircase”. We stop for a photograph opportunity at The Glenfinnan Monument, erected in 1815 in memory of the clansmen who supported the Young Pretender, Bonnie Prince Charlie. Here we can also see the Glenfinnan viaduct, made famous in the Harry Potter films. Driving towards Mallaig, we pass through, undeniably, the most beautiful scenery in Scotland. From the busy fishing port of Mallaig, we take a short ferry crossing to the Isle of Skye. Arriving at Armadale, we take time to visit the impressive castle and gardens and then make for the town of Portree, where we have dinner and spend the night. DAY 2 After a hearty Scottish breakfast, we cross the Skye bridge to Kyle of Lochalsh and then on to Eilean Donan Castle, location of the movie “Highlander”. Here we stop for a visit and photo-shoot. Travelling onwards through Glen Sheil towards the Great Glen and the banks of Loch Ness, we stop at Urquhart Castle and again at Drumnadrochit where we take a cruise on Loch Ness before lunch. “The Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition Experience” offers you the chance to discover all the known facts about the mysterious monster, “Nessie”. Before arriving at our accommodation in Inverness we enjoy a relaxing break at Tomnahurich to watch the lock system in operation and learn more about the Caledonian Canal from the Lock keeper. We take an early evening visit to either the prehistoric burial cairns and standing stones at Clava Cairns or Culloden Battlefield, scene of the last pitched battle on British soil, before dinner in Inverness and turning in for the evening. DAY 3 Leaving Inverness behind we journey to Aviemore where we experience the beautiful Speyside countryside by traveling aboard the Strathspey Steam Railway. Chat to the driver and fireman to discover the mechanics of a steam locomotive and view the Cairngorm Mountains, famous for its winter sports. Heading south, we continue our journey through Cairngorms National Park to visit and tour the Highland distillery at Dalwhinney. Here we can sample the “gentle spirit” of the Glen and learn about the “Angels Share”, created during the maturing process. Climbing over the Pass of Drumochter and on through the Pass of Killicrankie, we head into Perthshire and on to Stirling Castle. This imposing castle can be seen from miles around and offers an intriguing insight into Scotland’s turbulent history through the Wars of Independence and into the Renaissance. We then view the beautiful Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park before arriving back in Glasgow in the early evening. BOOK NOW |
